Roma women in the Hârșova community benefited from parental education and self-empowerment sessions

Since July, in Hârșova, under the project “Inclusion and Health in PORT (Hârșova) through Education, Arts, and Sports (PN1038)”, activities focusing on parental education, autonomy, and self-empowerment for Roma women have been conducted.

The activities aim to familiarize participants with childcare practices for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents, as well as to enhance their capacity to represent themselves in society.

”Incluziune și sănătate în PORT (Hârșova) prin educație, arte și sport (PN1038)”. Cursuri de educație parentală

Parental education courses: The parental education activity targets 180 women, divided into four groups. The first group held seven meetings from July to October 2022, covering the following themes:

  • Types of families
  • Children’s rights and abuse
  • Physical development of children
  • Care needs: hygiene, nutrition, bathing, transportation, clothing, footwear
  • Basics of first aid, diseases, vaccines, allergies
  • Child development between 1-7 years
  • Information about kindergarten and school

Young mothers, young grandmothers, and teenagers, sometimes accompanied by their children and grandchildren, attended these meetings. The presentations included video materials with examples of best practices, sharing relevant childcare experiences, providing scientific information, and debunking harmful myths, all in an informal, friendly setting.

The participants were actively engaged in the meetings, showing concern for the upbringing and education of their children and grandchildren. Emphasis was placed on the importance of children’s attendance at school or kindergarten. Currently, the activities are ongoing with the second group of participants.
